Sahitya Akademi award for Abburi Chaya Devi

Abburi Chaya Devi, the `grand young' feminist writer in Telugu has been named for the Central Sahitya Akademi's award for short story writing.The announcement was made in New Delhi on December 22,2005. Ms. Chaya Devi is the wife of late Abburi Varadarajeswara Rao, himself an illustrious writer, critic and former Chairman, Official Languages Commission. She is also the daughter-in-law of Abburi Ramakrishna, a pioneer of the romantic first and later the progressive literary movement. Ms. Chaya Devi has been active in literary circles since the fifties and even at 71 years of age, is still known as a creative feminist writer. She has also translated German fiction. She has served as librarian at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in the sixties.


Telugu University annual literary awards (2004)

The Potti sreeramulu Telugu University has announced its annual literary awards for the best books for 2004 on December 9,2005. Following is the list:`Sandarbham' (Free Verse) authored by Kandukuri Sriramulu, `Bhagavadramanuja Charithram' (verse poetry) by Baadala Ramaiah, `Vaana Chinukulu' (lyrical poetry) by Vaaranaasi Nagalakshmi, `Mana Vaarasatvam' (children's literature)by Velaga Venkatappaiah,`Amuktha Malyada - Sahitya Aadhyathmika Sameeksha' (Literary criticism) by Kotha Venkateswara Rao (posthumous),`Astitvanadam Aavali Teerana'(shortstory)byMunipalleB.Raju, Vendimeegham'(novel)by Saleem,`Asrughosha' (drama) by Jeedigunta Ramachandra Murthy,`Sweetchakosam Oka Vihanga Yaatra'(translation) by J.Chennaiah,`Samsaaraalu'(others)bySudhama,Varnanisi'(from the books written by women writers) by Chillara Bhavani Devi. Jaya Prabha has been chosen for the best woman writer award, Nirmala Sankara Sastry-best Sanskrit scholar and Syed Sirajuddin-best Urdu scholar award. The awards have been presented on December15,2005

 

11 selected for Pratibha awards

 

Potti Sriramulu Telugu University has announced Pratibha Puraskarams-2004 for 11 eminent personalities from various fields.

The awardees are P.Satyavathi (Novels/Short Stories), Palagummi Vishwanatham (music), M.Usha Gayatri (dance), M Jayanth (painting), Polavarapu Surya Prakasharao (drama), K Ramachandra Murthy (journalism), Vegunta Mohana Prasad (poetry), Valampati Venkata Subbaiah (critique and research), Kadem Sum-maiah (folk art), Gauribhatla Ramakrishna Sarma (avadhanam). Sanskrit scholar Appala Someshwara  will also  be  honoured.

The awardees were presented Rs 20,116 cash  and  a  shawl.The awards were presented at a function on Nov. 16,2005 at Telugu University, Hyderabad.
